INS CHAKRA







 

INS CHAKRA IS 8140 TONNE AKULA CLASS NUCLEAR ATTACK SUBMARINE AND IS ALSO CALLED AS K-52 NERPA. IT WAS LAUNCHED IN 2008 AND CAME INTO SERVICE OF RUSSIAN NAVY BY 2009. IT WAS LEASED TO INDIAN NAVY IN 2011 AND WAS COMMISSIONED INT INDIAN NAVY ON 4 APRIL 2012 MARKING DEVELOPMENT OF TIES BETWEEN INDIA AND RUSSIA. IT HAS BEEN LEASED TO INDIA FOR 10 YEARS FOR A COST OF USD 670 MILLION. THE NAME NERPA IS A RUSSIAN WORD FOR BAIKAL SEAL AND CHAKRA IN INDIAN MEANS A WHEEL OR A  DISC.

 ACCIDENT ON BOARD NERPA:

AN ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON NERPA AT 8:30 PM LOCAL TIME ON 8 OCT 2008, WHEN IT WAS UNDERGOING AN UNDERWATER TEST IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN. OUT OF THE TOTAL CREW OF 208 PEOPLE AT 20 WERE KILLED AND 21 WERE INJURED IN THAT ACCIDENT.
ACCORDING TO REPORTS THE DEATH OF THE PEOPLE ON BOARD WAS CAUSED DUE TO THE RELEASE OF  R-114B2(Dibromotetrafluoroethane).
